Hello, my name is Mary Schwarz, D.O. and I am currently completing the intern year at Bay Regional Medical Center. Several individuals that have applied to our program have asked me what a typical "day in the life" of an intern is like. To answer this question, I will walk interested individuals through a "week in the life" of an intern since our daily activities differ depending on the particular day of the week.
Monday
0700 – Morning Report in the small café. Residents, interns, and medical students convene for a lecture given by an attending physician, ancillary staff member, medical student, or a fellow resident. The atmosphere is very relaxed and individuals are encouraged to freely ask questions and interact with the speaker.
0800 – Report to rotation. If you happen to be on a surgical service and an early procedure is scheduled, you may need to report to your service at an earlier time and hence be absent from morning report that day.
1330 – Report to the Family and Child Health Clinic to see scheduled family practice patients. Interns evaluate, formulate management plans, and perform procedures for up to four patients under the supervision of attending physicians. Monday happens to be "my" clinic afternoon. Each intern has one half day of clinic each week that could fall on any week day except Wednesday, which is reserved for didactics.
Tuesday
0700 – Morning Report.
0800 – Report to rotation.
1800 – Journal Club. One Tuesday evening each month interns, residents, and students are treated to a full dinner at a local restaurant while a fellow resident presents a recent medical journal article.
Wednesday
0700 – Morning Report.
0800 – Report to rotation.
1200 – Didactics begin. Residents, interns, and medical students convene for a series of lectures. Lunch is provided. One Wednesday each month, individuals attend "high risk OB" conference at this time prior to the beginning of didactics. At this meeting, obstetricians and nurse midwives discuss the management of high risk pregnancies they are currently following.
In addition, one Wednesday each month didactics end early and a clinical management meeting is held. During this meeting, clinic staff, residents, interns, and attending physicians discuss operational issues specific to the Family and Child Health Clinic (the residency clinic).
Thursday
0700 – Morning Report.
0800 – Report to rotation.
Friday
0700 – Morning Report. Friday morning report is typically a case presentation given by a medical student.
0800 – Report to Rotation.
*If you happen to be on call a certain night, you will be paged at 1730 by the intern or resident assigned to the PCIM service to receive patient check-out. After receiving check-out, the on-call will answer floor calls from home. Admissions will require the on-call to report to the hospital to see and admit the patient. At 0530 the next morning, the on-call will page the resident following then to give report on the night’s events. The day will then proceed as usual.
